There is no fault here as most of us simply weren’t taught that sexual intimacy is a yoga—an art form. Its full expression requires the practice of breath, movement, relaxation, and focus. Because of this, so many ignore the fact that we are using a fraction of our hearts and bodies’ capacity in love. You’ve likely heard we use ten percent of our brains? I submit we are using a similarly small proportion of our hearts, bodies, and nervous systems in our relating and love making. What I have seen repeatedly is that as humans strengthen the energetic channels in their bodies to conduct and transmit the myriad textures of love-energy available, so much more of them comes online. Desires for certain kinds of devotion, dark sexual energy and emotions of all kinds begin to flow with more amplitude. Sex gets hotter, deeper, and more life-changingly connected. We have more space to receive the full spectrum of our partners, including their anger, fear, trauma, and yearnings. Not simply their superficial sexual energy. Our love and sexual intimacies become the place where we are fully expressed and fully received, no matter what trauma, freaky sexual needs or unquenchable desires we carry.
Neuroscience has shown recently that our neuroplasticity, meaning our brains capacity to learn and expand new skills and information is nearly endless. We can develop all sorts of abilities, even later in life, if we repeatedly engage in new learnings. Why would it be any different in our romantic lives?
Why couldn’t we, through repeated practice, become true artists of love, pleasure and spiritual awakenings sprung from devotional practice. As our neuroplasticity increases, our capacity to create new hormones and brain chemicals also increase. We produce more dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. We even create more DMT in bouts of long sexual practice.
We literally, from a biological and neurological perspective, massively expand how much love and magic we can create. And how good we can feel with it. Through practice. Just as learning a new musical instrument creates all kinds of healthy and creative neural pathways, so can our yogic intimacy practices allow for incredible new possibilities of happiness, fulfillment, and oneness.
